Hearth and Hamlet Building Tier List (August 2026)
Last updated: 2026-08-25
Priority order for what to build and research first, ranked by how much a run stalls without it. Placements come from the unlock chain visible in the official screenshots and playthrough footage, plus the mechanics the developers describe in the 1.0.x patch notes - they are a spending order, not stats pulled from the game files.
S Tier
Name
Role
Why
Storage capacity research
Economy floor
A resource at its cap wastes every point of production behind it. Warehouse and hut storage upgrades pay for themselves before any production upgrade does.
Farm
Food engine
Adds base farm productivity and food storage, and unlocks the Market. Food is the hard ceiling on population, and population is the ceiling on workers.
Market
Gold and trade gateway
Unlocks financial upgrades and the trade line. Trade income is steadier than taxation and does not cost happiness.
A Tier
Name
Role
Why
Chief's House
Unlock hub
Opens the quarry, hunting and carpenter; its upgrade unlocks the Library. Cheap, and everything early branches off it.
Woodcutting Lodge
Workforce and unlocks
Adds workers and unlocks stone, the tavern and the wood cabin - the widest single unlock in the opening stretch.
Town Square
Stage gate
Replaces the starting camp, unlocks the iron mine and roads, and adds resource storage. Gates the middle of the run.
Library and Education Building
Blueprint access
The education line is what unlocks blueprint research; without blueprints, upgrades stall even when you can afford them in raw resources.
B Tier
Name
Role
Why
Harbor District and Shipwright
Maritime trade
Ships carry more than caravans and open materials the home settlement cannot produce. Strong, but only once food runs a comfortable surplus.
Magic Academy
Late multiplier
Unlocks magical upgrades, shop items and storage. It multiplies an economy that already works - built early it is a drain.
Cathedral
Event answer
Researches consecrated weapons and is the response to the Ancient Evil arc rather than a general-purpose upgrade.
C Tier
Name
Role
Why
Standing army beyond raid needs
Defense
Each soldier eats food and iron every second and training takes a minute, so an oversized force drains the economy it protects. Recruit to the raid in front of you, not past it.
Soup Kitchen
Happiness policy
Buys happiness with food consumption. Patch 1.0.03 corrected the tooltip to +20% food consumption, so treat it as expensive until food is comfortably in surplus.
Sustained high taxation
Gold policy
Generates gold but cuts happiness sharply, and happiness scales every resource. Use it as a short burst for a specific purchase, then lower it again.
