Hearth and Hamlet Blueprints: How to Get Them

What blueprints are

Blueprints are a currency you cannot mine. You can have every resource an upgrade lists and still be unable to buy it, because the upgrade also needs a blueprint of a particular tier - and blueprint tiers come from a different part of the tech chain entirely.

This is the single most common “why is this greyed out” moment in the game. The developers acknowledged it directly: patch 1.0.01 added a smart tooltip that advises players about blueprints when hovering over them in the building menu, and patch 1.0.03 changed the Education Building’s reward description to state specifically whether it unlocks blueprint research.

The tiers

  • Advanced blueprints (green) - purchasable from the Library shop once the Library is up. These cover the earlier wave of upgrades.
  • Expert blueprints (blue) - not purchasable at the Library. They arrive through the education line, and they are what the middle of the run runs on.
  • Higher design tiers - Master and Legendary building design research appear later, each unlocking a further band of upgrades.

The practical implication: if a blue blueprint is what you are missing, no amount of shopping will produce it. You need the research.

The route

  1. Chief House upgrade unlocks the Library.
  2. Library gives you the shop where advanced blueprints can be bought, and buying from it is what lets you upgrade the Library itself.
  3. Education Building / education centre comes off the Library line and is the gate to blueprint research proper.
  4. General Education, then Expert Building Design, unlock the expert tier and its shop item.

Because the chain is four steps deep, it pays to start it earlier than feels necessary - well before you hit the upgrade that needs the result.

When an upgrade will not unlock

Work down this list:

  1. Is it a blueprint requirement rather than a resource one? Hover the upgrade and read the whole requirement line, not just the resource icons.
  2. Which tier of blueprint? Green can be bought; blue cannot.
  3. Is the education line actually finished? The Education Building unlocking blueprint research is now spelled out in its description as of patch 1.0.03 - if your description does not say it, your build is older than that patch.
  4. Is something else consuming the blueprints? Every building upgrade can take one, so a blueprint spent on a minor structure is not available for the gate you actually care about.

Spending blueprints well

Blueprints are scarce in a way resources are not, so treat them like the constrained currency they are:

  • Prioritise blueprints on storage and production multipliers, which compound for the rest of the run.
  • Deprioritise them on structures you built for a single quest.
  • If a blueprint unlocks a shop item rather than a building, check what the shop item does before spending - some of them are permanent global upgrades, which usually beats a single building tier.
