Hearth and Hamlet Not Launching? Fixes That Work
Black screen with music, or a freeze at startup
This is the most reported launch problem and the developer has addressed it directly in the Steam discussions. Work through these in order:
- Use the launch options. Starting the game presents Vulkan and Compatibility (OpenGL) options. The developer specifically recommends trying Compatibility mode when the game will not get past a black screen - it was added for exactly this problem.
- Update your graphics drivers. Outdated drivers are the other repeated cause in the same threads.
- Verify integrity of game files in Steam - right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify.
- On Linux, the developer suggested the launch command
--rendering-driver vulkanfor the demo. For 1.0 there is a native Linux build, which is the better answer than running the Windows version through Proton.
A note on the source of these reports: most of the black-screen threads date from the demo period (April to July 2026), and the developer rebuilt how the game launches before release partly because of them. If you hit this on 1.0, the launch options are still the first thing to try, and the Discord is where the developer asks people to bring hardware-specific cases.
Buttons you cannot click, or UI off the screen
From the developer’s own Known Issues thread:
- A menu you cannot close, or UI running off the screen means UI scaling is set too high for your resolution. Open the options menu and turn UI scaling down, or enable Auto UI Scaling.
- Windowed mode, especially on Linux, can push part of the UI off-screen. Resizing or moving the window usually fixes it.
- Changing resolution can leave the Incoming Enemy Tracker in the bottom right stuck in the wrong place. Saving and exiting the game fixes it.
- Small visual glitches on Linux at launch are known and acknowledged.
The research book keeps closing
Patch 1.0.01 adjusted the research book’s hitboxes so slight misclicks no longer close it, and locked the book’s tabs to one side to stop them moving around. If yours still shuffles, you are on an older build.
Accidental camera jumps
Blue arrows point at quest locations, and clicking one zooms the camera to it - which was easy to do by accident. Patch 1.0.01 shrunk their hitbox, patch 1.0.03 made them ignore ordinary mouse clicks entirely, and Shift + Click is now the deliberate way to fast travel to one. You can also disable blue arrows in the options menu.
Harvesting feels awkward
Patch 1.0.01 added a Hover to Click option that removes the need to click and hold to gather. Patch 1.0.02 then restricted the space bar to gathering only while you are still hovering the location you clicked, and closed a Hover to Click exploit that produced double resources - so if a guide describes doubled manual gathering, it predates that fix.
Steam Deck
There is no Steam Deck Verified rating. The developer has said their own Deck runs the game well, and recommended verifying game files and using an up-to-date Proton version - advice that predates the native Linux build now shipping with 1.0. Full specs are on the system requirements page.
Still stuck
The developer answers bug reports on the official Discord and in the Bug Reports thread on Steam, and has been visibly quick about it - four patches shipped in the first six days after launch. Include your OS, whether you used Vulkan or Compatibility mode, and what the screen actually does.
